Our intent in setting up this blog is to share our current thinking in the world of literacy. It may be a small nugget of learning or a huge "a-ha" moment. Part of our job in the land of the LRT is to spend time researching and passing along the latest and greatest to you. In the past, we tried to send out a weekly "literacy minute" by email. This was successful for awhile, but became a bit overwhelming. We hope that this blog will serve, first of all, the same purpose....to share our thinking. We also hope that it will deepen our thinking as we respond to each other, and look back at our thoughts over time. Writing to grow our thoughts is something we stress with our students. We also want their thinking to be grown by listening to the thinking of others and we want the same for ourselves. Your responses and comments will be crucial to all of our learning. We hope you will join us in sharing your efforts in literacy from the trenches. You are the ones making the magic happen!!

It is exciting to know that we will now have access to each other's expertise in the world of literacy. We have such valuable literacy insight and knowledge in teachers throughout the district. It is time for that to be shared. As balanced literacy moves forward in our district, it becomes increasingly more important to communicate with teachers beyond the walls of our respective buildings. As LRTs we get the rare opportunity to see balanced literacy in action in so many different environments. Now you will have the opportunity to hear about the magic that IS happening all over! Please, please, please share your successes AND your struggles. Remember, we often learn the most from our struggles. We shoulod celebrate those as well. I look forward to learning from all of you and hope that our "literacy minutes" continue to hit you where you are in your learning. Happy blogging!
Thanks for setting up this blog.
I recently had the opportunity to teach 6th grade for a few weeks and really have gotten good practice in making sure I was writing and planning effective lessons using the plan that Pollock refers to in her book One Teacher at a Time.
Wondering if this learning target is appropriate. I question it because I really think that it is two targets in one but it is hard to one without the other. Let me know your thoughts?
Students will identify personification in written work and will determine the meaning of it.
Thanks again for this blogging opportunity. Teachers helping teachers is the way to go!

Sara's target - Students will identify personification in written work and will determine the meaning of it.
I think this question gets to the root of many of my recent conversations about learning targets. We want them to be clear enough so that they are understandable and obtainable for students but meaty enough to get to the essential learning for students. We want to pair basic knowledge with some application of this to a higher level of thinking.
My first reaction is that it would depend on the students and the class. When thinking about this target it has two different levels of engagement....basic knowledge in identifying and analysis in determing meaning. If the class has the basic knowledge to idenify then the linkage of the two makes it a very powerful target. If they are not proficient in identifying will they be able to do both in a daily lesson?
I am looking forward to what others are thinking!
I am looking forward to the new ideas!
This is a great idea
This is great! :-)
Thank you for organizing this means of interacting with others in this busy world. This is a new thing to me, and I hope that I have figured out how to add to the blog.
I will reread everyone's responses and add comments at a later date.
Hopefully, I will be successful at submitting my comment....here goes!
This sounds like a great opportunity to hear what others are doing to promote student learning in order to strive for excellence.
I know it can be hard to find time to seek advise from others. Now I can do this with the tip of my fingers! Thanks
It is always exciting to learn something new!
This is a great way to learn from others.

What a great way to communicate! This will be a very valuable tool.
Using a blog is new to me. I look forward to using it.
After our inservice, I am excited to try blogging. Thank you for setting this us ladies.
Upon reading your comments I realized I had been mislead...I didn't know we were the ones who made the "magic" happen, I was told it was Steins! Well, anyway, I just wanted to put a question out there. Has anyone had any success trying to include LD students in the regular ed. book clubs? We have tried but with minimal success and was hoping someone had some ideas to share. Thoughts?
